Old iPod HD in USB HD Case

I have a first generation iPod with a bad firewire jack. My goal was to put the hard drive into an external USB HD case. I ordered a USB/FW case and discovered that the iPod's HD does not fit the connector in the usb case. It's my understanding that the iPod's HD is a standard notebook drive. Is there some sort of adapter I need? (I am at work right now, so I cannot provide pictures.)

My understanding after a lengthy foray into the world of computer repair is that macs use esoteric, specialized hardware that is not compatible with anything else on the face of the known planet because Steve Jobs loves his hardware/software monopoly.

Now, having said that, I could be wrong.

And you are.
There is a conversion plug out there....somewhere.
Several sites have used it in order to get a raw dump of the drive to reverse engineer the file system to create the linux on IPOD projects.
The mass availibility of this plug is doubtful though. Google, ebay, and newsgroups for hardware hacking are our freinds for a foray like this.

I don't know anything about latent HD software, so if you completely wiped the drive what kind of file system would it have?

By file system do you mean FAT32, NTFS sort of thing, or something else?

If the iPod drive is a notebook drive and the enclosure is for standard EIDE drives you will need a 44 to 40-pin converter. They carry them regular stock at CompUSA.

The extra 4 pins are the power the hard drive and make a secondary power connector unnecessary, the adapter should be less than $10.

Kind of. Steve knew damn well that using FAT would be easily tinkered with, and others would reverse engineer the IPOD fast if they could read of how it organized it's files, it's operating instruction sets, etc (Not all the IPOD OS are hardwired in, some parts of the menu are supposedly on the first sector of the drive)
As I understand it, the IPOD uses the same file system as OSx, with the first sector being write protected and set up to be non-visible to anything without the correct instruction set so that it could not be overwritten.
