Firefox file associations help

I've been trying to set file associations (Referred to as 'helper applications' in the Mozilla days) in Firefox. That is: if I see a *.xyz file I want firefox to feed it into my ABC application. I've scoured Edit->Preferences, and about:config but I can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated.

How old a copy of Firefox is that? I noticed you referred to Edit/Preferences, but that's been moved to Tools/Options (on Windows at least) before Firefox 1.0 was released. And for Mac it is under Firefox/Preferences. I don't know about Linux variants. If you aren't using 1.0.4 (or, next week or so, 1.0.5), upgrade.

Anyway, that information is under Options/Downloads/Download Actions on my copy, but I'm using the nightly Deer Park builds. Should be something similar for you, though.

Guess I should have been a bit more forward with the 'nfo. I'm running 1.0.4 on a linux (2.4) box. I don't have Options under Tools, but I have Preferences under Edit. Under the Download section, I do not have a Download Actions, but there is a File Types. I've tried to add a new file type, but there doesn't seem to be a button for it.

OK, sorry 'bout that. I don't think you can add files directly. I think that you need to encounter such a file on the web first, and when Firefox asks you what to do with the file, you can select a program and click the box "always do this with this kind of file". It'll then be saved to the Download section. (It has been a while since I tried this, however.)

Thanks Redlemon,
That's a rather 'round and about way to get the file association in there, but it works.

Cool. Yeah, it's weird for someone who knows exactly what they are doing, but for Grandma, this way Firefox does it now is easier.

Well if you are in for some "hacking" you can manually edit your ~/.mozilla/firefox/[profilecode]/mimetypes.rdf file. I belive that has all the file associations in there.
