Running a Serv-U private FTP server on a router? - Tilted Forum Project - TFP - Sexuality, Philosophy and Political Discussion

I'm trying to set up a Serv-U Private FTP server on my computer to access via online, but I can't figure out how to do it. The router is connected to two other computers and my XBOX. Whenever I want to FTP from one computer to another it's fine, because they're all on the same hub. But since the router has its own IP address, and each computer have their own IP addresses within the router, I can't figure out how to set up Serv-U to let me access one of my computers via online. I use a D-Link router, if that information helps any. Any ideas?

You need to configure the router and setup the ftp virtual server to point to your computer.

Ok so I used this tutorial: http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.as...1&question=ftp yet it still doesn't work. I'm supposed to connect via FTP client to my router's IP, and not my computer's IP, right? Whenever I try, it just doesn't work. I have my client set to passive also.

If you're inside of your internal network, you need to FTP to the box's IP address that's running the FTP server (as you won't need to forward ports if it's internal traffic). If you're outside of your network, you'd just enter your external IP (which will hit your router first, then forward that traffic to the box with the FTP server on it, providing you forwarded the correct ports to the correct address.)

What you're talking about is network access translation; the router has its own IP to the external and internal worlds, whereas each computer has an IP address assigned to them by the router -- they have NO external IP. The router is the only thing 'visible' to the world. When you send an FTP command to an IP address, its going to the only visible IP -- that of your router. It's sent via the ports listed above, and so its then the job of the router to say -- "Port 21 and 20.. these automatically get forwarded to Computer A."

Dunno if that helps, but that is how it was explained to me long ago..

Ok but when I try to use my router's IP (the 'external' IP), in the actions log, it says "IP xx.xxx.xxx.xxx is NOT LISTENING on port 21"

That's my current problem.

Ok that tutorial is crap, go into the "virtual server" part of that same section on the router config and edit the virtual ftp server listing and put in the ip address of your ftp server, enable it, then save it and your set to go.

I use to run an ftp a long time ago using serv-u ftp software and a linksys router. First thing would be to check to see if your isp blocks you from having an active server on that port, I had to run mine on a port that was not blocked like port 7575, 8080..etc. Some isp's block port 21, 80 incoming so you can't host ftp's and websites. the changing the port is one, but it gets tricker to connect to.
As well if your connecting to an ftp server through a router, and the ftp is on a computer through a router then sometimes it will not work do to the port forwarding. It will work but sometimes the client that is trying to connect will have trouble logging in.
i know to get it to work on my system I had to set the router is static (internal) ips for each pc. then do the forwarding to that specific ip that the ftp server is on.
