I bought a liteon 1673 dvd burner and ive tried moserbaer,tdk dvds but there are usually about 2 files not burnt properly on all of them...
can i do anything to reduce the number of errors like use a different software(nero6 right now), use other media(not easy to find here)...changing between 2x and 4x doesnt seem to help?

Try other media. What media does LiteOn suggest?

I assume the PC does not have memory problems.

Stop other active tasks and see if it helps.

Sure, there are lots of things to be done.

Update the software you use to burn with.
Update the firmware of the drive you're using.
Slow writing speeds.
Shut down all programs not neccessary to burn the DVD.
Leave the PC alone while it's burning.
Change media.

If you're pulling the data straight from a DVD (movies, games, whatever...) rip it to the computer first then burn it. Especially if the DVD Drive you're pulling information from and the DVD burner are on the same cable.

How much RAM do you have? If you look at the process of DVD copying, you can identify where the weaknesses could lie. It has to read from a DVD, cache it to RAM, and then write it out to another DVD.

So -- the problem could be the DVD its reading from, the read speed, the software its using to read, the amount of RAM it has to cache to, the speed of the RAM it has to cache to, the software it uses to burn the DVD, the burn speed, the DVD drive quality, or the DVD media quality.

The most likely culprits are of course RAM and software. I'd recommend Nero and at LEAST 1GB for nearly flawless burning. That's a nice drive, and the media shouldn't matter too much. And, as the posters above said, always copy it locally first. Then you're removing the step of reading AND writing simultaneously, which takes more RAM. Likewise, if they're on the same IDE ribbon, you'll have competition for who gets to use the ribbon when..

your tdk's are probably also Moser Baer's btw.

best I can suggest, without having more info from you, is

1. use the latest Nero. Always.
2. Defrag your hdd.

3. check out this place, especially the forums. http://www.cdfreaks.com/
I've been burning a crapload of data lately, and done a bit of looking around the site.
way more than anything you'd ever want/need to know. but should be able to help with basic things too.

.. files not burnt properly ... do you get a successful burn, and then have read errors/copy errors/crc errors? or, does it simply fail burn at the end?
how full are you packing these discs?

i upgraded to the JS07 firmware
i dun touch the comp while burning and turn off most progs...half gig ram
i just burn data to dvd...not ripping

some of the files give a crc error when trying to copy back...but none are totally unusable
i usually pack it almost full coz most anime series end up 4.2gb or so

which are the recommended media for liteon?
can't find anything other than moderbaer over here unfortunatly

well if you can't find other media, then you will have to deal with what you do have.
(but Taiyo Yuden media, if you can find it, is supposed to be excellent)

are you using +R or -R discs?

and again, check that link I posted.

btw, how long since your last defrag, are you using the latest nero ...?
next time you burn, use, from the Nero Toolkit, the cd/dvd speed util, choose the scan disc tab, and run that on it.

My experience with burning video (several thousand) is that most errors occur on the outer edge of the disk. If you can reduce the file size a bit you may eliminate your problem.

www.afterdawn.com is another site that talks to dvd burning and media.

Moser-Bauer is considered mid grade media and should work fine for data. TDK is made by several manufacturers ranging from very good to lousy, I won't use it because you can't tell which you are getting from the packaging. There are several utilities out there that can pull the media ID code to tell you which company actually manufactured the dvd. If reducing the size doesn't work or isn't possible, I'd try a high end brand to prove it isn't media. I've had very good success with Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi (Verbatim), and Ritek (4x) media.

What happens when you do a "practice burn" with Nero? Does it come out error-free? If so then it's probably the media.
