computer speakers

i want to get a decent pair for my laptop, it only has a headphone jack... i have old soundblaster speakers from 1991 that i got from an old computer... they arn't as loud as they used to be on the old computer... is this because my laptop just doesnt output as much audio power? what should i look for in speakers in order to find a good pair with good volume??

You might want to look into getting an external sound card. This will take care of your output woes. I'd recommend anything by Creative. The Audigy line has some good solutions:

I've tried the external creative soundcard, and I didn't like it for the laptop. It just seemed to much, especially plugged into 5.1 speakers, and they didn't sound right. They've got a pcmcia soundcard now that looks more promising.

I very much like my Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers. I play music from my laptop on them, sounds great.

One place to look about low output is the mixer settings. Could be your levels are set low and you don't know it. On XP, go Start -> Control Panels -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Advanced (in "Device volume"). Check out all the nifty sliders--slide them around and see if you get better output.

they are all up, the computer speakers are actually louder than the old outboard ones i plugged in... soo i htink those are just to old and weak

i'm a sonar and soundforge user, i dont use those on this computer... but if i ever do have ambition to do soo, i'm going to go all out, but as for now, i'm not going to get too much...

off the topic of this a little, i have a stereo with no way inputs, i'm soon getting a portable sirus player... would it be hard to maybe rig something up inside the stero unit to create an input?? maybe swap out one of the two cassette tape players.. ?

...i had to stop and remember the word for cassettes, soo vintage
