What's the best software program to learn proper typing? - Tilted Forum Project - TFP - Sexuality, Philosophy and Political Discussion

So recently I received a data entry job, and while my typing skills are OK, I never really learned the proper way to type. Over Christmas break I'd like to get a software program that teaches me how to type like a pro. I need my fellow tfp'ers recommendations as there are a lot of programs out there for this. Ideally the best program would also be the cheapest, but I'll pay more moe a program that is really well made. Thanks.

Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor has always rocked the keyboard, sometimes you can find it in the bargain bin.

I'd reccomend Mavis Beacon. I had a copy of it way back in the DOS/Windows 3.1 days I believe, might of been Windows 95(I have a bad memory). It taught me the basics of typing, and I got faster the more I typed.

i've learned that typing isn't an exact art, it's more of memory thing. I can type with my hands off the home keys and i can find any key i want to as long as the lights are on(without looking), but where i sometimes run into trouble is hitting the space bar too soon, or long shifts like tyring to make a capital G, might take some time.

Im a pretty fast typer too. So if u can master doing it your own way you'll make due. And anyways, their not paying you per entry, so take your time

Mavis beacon is what my school uses I believe.

But honestly, typing is done on a keyboard, which is hardware. So you must learn via hardware

i never used a program to learn to type with but after a couple classes that failed i figured out something that worked much much better.

First of all on the F and the J keys you can feel little bumps for your index fingers keep your index fingers on those unless your pushing a button with them.
After you get that down use the closest finger to the button you want to push all the time.
Then get a good instant messanger or chat program or whatever and find some people to talk to on it and talk to them for a few hours a day till you have it down.
Worked for me at least and it was free =P

Well from all of your recommendations I got a copy of Mavis Beacon 16 deluxe edition for $11 off ebay. I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the advice everyone.
