So we bought a pistol over this weekend. We've wanted to for a while but kept it just to rifles until now. It's a Walther P22 and was actually really nice, only jammed once in the two hours we shot it this weekend.

It was rather hot out so I was wearing a tank top which I know I shouldn't have but did. When I was shooting one of the empty shells ejected and went down my shirt and stuck in my bra. Yeah it hurt, I probably came close to shooting my foot trying to get it out but the marks are starting to fade, one blistered a bit but it's also going away. All in all, I'm fine and glad it wasn't one of the larger caliber ones.

I don't know much about this but I'm just curious why every so often one of the shells would come back at me instead of going off to the right like they're supposed to? Is it how they're loaded? Is there a way to avoid it? I dunno, just a curiousity since I don't know much about guns considering.

It could be an inconsistency in your grip, try to make sure you hold the pistol the same way every time, or maybe try shooting with a much looser grip to see if you can replicate the problem.

If that doesn't work you know it is the pistol itself.

Sounds like you may not have been gripping the pistol firmly. You don't need to have a death grip on the thing, but typically (not always, but usually) if the shells are flying straight back at you, you're grip is too loose.

while your grip is probably partly at fault I have shot my friends p-22 quite often and the little .22 cartridge does seem to be rather unpredictable. I am rather practiced at firing my 9mm CZ P-01 and I am confident in my grip and I still have cartidges going all over the place.

my suggestion: wear an uncollared t-shirt with a normal neckline, its not the most fashionable thing, but I've never managed to get a shell of any kind down a plain ole t-shirt. I used to wear tucked in polos sometimes but my brother-in laws .357 sig bounced one off the roof and into my tucked in shirt, but at least I dont wear bras :P

Another problem may not be your grip, it may be the ammo that you are shooting. Now I don't have a P22 but when ever I shoot .22 ammo from my bolt action Marlin, I will still get casings going in every direction.I think this has to do with the fact that not all the ammo has the same amount of powder in it. The quality control is not that specific with certain brands of ammo. That may be your problem. Or it could be your grip also.

It's not your grip, its becauser your shooting a P22, they've done the same thing to me.

You know, I have to wonder, having never shot a P-22 but having shot many many other types of weapons, maybe they are not providing a strong enough extractor spring to be producing consistent extraction of the spent cases. It easily could be the way the gun is held, or if it is "limp-wristed" when fired or not, but it sounds like a common issue with the P-22. Someone with one should investigate the extractor spring, out of curiosity anyway... no guarantees.

I've never shot a P22, so I apologize for being unfamiliar with the particular quirks of this gun, that issue is a common one among semi-auto pistols when people limp wrist their guns.

wait a second, I can't believe I glossed over this.

Your bolt action 22 ejects spent cases slightly differently every time because theres a slightly different amount of powder in each round?

What does that have to do with how they are being ejected? or are you saying that since one round has a little more powder its more likely to stick a little bit?
