I'm guilty of using pistol scopes on rifles instead of buying scout scopes.

I'm looking to add a scout scope to my garand, any suggestions?

Back before scout setups were popular enough to warrant their own type of scope subset, pistol scopes were used because there are a few of them that offer the right eye relief - the trouble was finding a pistol scope with a wide enough range of relief to make it feasible for rifle use. Many have the minimum distance a little too far away so rifle use is impractical.

I'd say, if you're using pistol scopes with eye relief in the right range for you to be comfortable shooting it, perfect

The crosshairs should ideally come into focus right as you get it to your shoulder.

Also, as far as magnification goes, the scout standard calls for a scope in the 2-3x range, because it's supposed to basically act as an enhanced open sight, preserving your entire range of vision with both eyes. The trouble with higher magnifications is that they eventually lead to a discrepancy in the brain and can cause a bit of confusion when the two pictures are combined. Many who shoot scout setups regularly don't have trouble on deer-sized targets out to 200-300m with the 2.5x sight.

Sorry I don't have any more suggestions on what specific scopes to get - try a few out and see what you like! Also, keep in mind that scout rifles perform poorly in low-light and at sunrise/sunset with the sun right in front of or behind you, so there should be backup iron sights on the rifle as well.

Heck, magnification wouldn't even be necessary for a pistol / scout scope... but it is nice to have. Usually 2-3x, like stated above.
