Any tips on sighting in a scope on an M48?

OK, I have a Yugo M48A. Pretty clean, shoots well with the iron sights, consistently puts lots of holes in black at 200 yards. Found a Russian scope with dovetail mount that was easy enough for this novice gunsmith to mount. I just got it horizontally aligned as good as possible by clamping it in my milling machine vice and sighting in on a telephone pole about 1/2 mile away, comparing it with the iron sights and down the barrel. I then did the same for the vertical by zeroing on a neighbor's fence rail at about 300 feet with the elevation knob at that distance. (well 100 meters, you get the idea....)

So now the fine tuning. Should I just set up a shooter's block and start putting holes in paper and adjusting as necessary? How far back should I be to start? How far back should I end up? I've read to dial it in at 400 yards so that you don't have to adjust elevation as much, just aim a little higher/lower.

I'd really like to get this nailed down tight, so any tips would be appreciated. TIA!

Easier to sight in closer than further to at least know you're in the ballpark. Once you move back, it can become difficult to decipher between the inaccuracy of the rifle and sight adjustment.

Also, how far away do you plan on shooting with it? No sense basing an adjustment at a distance it will never see.
