NC/VA Range Trip

Who is interested in some sort of range-day get together somewhere in the NC/VA area?

It can be either a meet at an agreed upon range, or a couple people could show up for the same IDPA match or whatnot.

No big promises, but it would be something to do for a day and everybody stands to learn something new.

I'm in northern VA but I'd be game for a range trip since I don't get out very much thanks to the time-vampire of higher education.

BYOG. I can supply quite a few toys to the pot. Have to go hit up a gun show and get a couple crates of rounds, though.

Hey, we could take pictures and put black slits over our eyes later, too!

...

I suppose new-to-gun TFPers would be invited so long as they are receptive to learning safely?

I would be down for a NC trip, I'm a novice so I'd be down for Greg showing me safety/proper tech. I have a pistol or rifle I could borrow for the trip (no I don't know the specs off the top of my head), I just need to know how much ammo to bring. I've been wanting to go to a range and have someone help me out with proper gun handleing and I trust greg to show me.

I have nothing against novices going so long as they are safe.

Quantity of ammo will depend on the style of shooting you expect to do.

I would like this to be a relaxed day at the range rather than full on instruction, but I have nothing against showing a few tricks and maybe learning some too.

Any suggestions for dates and/or locations?

Wish I could go but I don't live in that area.

I don't expect a full on training course, just make sure I'm not doing anything wrong. I would just want to be safe.

Obviously, if Crompsin's in I'm in. I'm a novice but I do have basic safety down and I own two guns I'm quite comfortable with. I've shot a handful of Crompsin's as well.

Anyone have a range to suggest? It would have to be a weekend (obviously), not sure how soon you're looking at. This weekend would be pushing it, and every other weekend from this one is good for us. The weekends in between we have farm responsibilities that would severely limit our ability to drive to southern VA/NC.

Did anyone else read that in a sexual context?

How about this range in Blacksburg:

David and Paula's Webpage - Blacksburg Shooting Range

I haven't personally been there, but it seems nice enough. Plus it is free. Does anybody know how crowded it tends to be?

Other suggestions are welcome. I am flexible on dates, though of course holiday weekends are bad.

I recommend my boss's backyard. Aim for the top left window at about 9pm.

Sweet: The Blacksburg Range sounds perfect. I like the "free" part and the 10 lanes part. I didn't note a phone number. Would have to check in advance for those ROTC days.

Easy Does It: I enjoy shooting a variety of ways, but slow sets of the basic stances would be my method. I need to spend some quality time on slow fire and my weak hand is very weak. My goal is to walk away from every range session with something more than a hole in my wallet and a dirty gun.

Targets: What kind of target setup do you favor? I usually use paper plates. They're cheap.

Timing: My weekends are every-others so I'd need a couple of other people to suggest date/times before I can throw my dart at the calendar for certain.

Also: I can supply newbie guns as well as more exotic pieces if others want to chip in for ammo.

What kind of supervision is there at the Blacksburg Range?

As far as I understand, it is an unsupervised Natl. Forest range.

Okay, suggestions on dates:

We're trading weekends with the barn owner so I can go home to Ohio next weekend, so Crompsin will be available for a range trip at that time (Nov 22/23). The next weekend we're free is Dec 13/14, then again Dec 27/28, and so on every other weekend.

If you're interested in next weekend, post away! The sooner the better for a meetup like this.. Crompsin has been excited about this since Greg brought it up.

Ooooh man. I'm in the Baltimore Area, I'm definitely down. I have a M1A, Ar15, AK and 1911. Been *really* looking forward to pushing my guns out beyond the darn 25yd range of my local range.

Dec 13/14 is probably best for me.

I have a farm Christmas party to attend on the 14th, so Crompsin is free to do MANLY things (the party is no boys allowed). If the trip is on the 13th, though, I'm tagging along.

Saturday is good for me. Sunday should be devoted to worshipping our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.

Sorry dude. And Saturday is out for me too. Saturday, Crom, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't get in a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't pick up the phone, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit dont roll on Shabbos!

SHOMER SHABBOS!

I'm looking forward to the 13th. Do we have a "basic load" estimate? Round count and duration of time people expect?

I don't want somebody to show up with a Glock 17 and two boxes of UMC yellow and look like the guy that goes out to the bar with "Just a $20."

I'm probably going to bring a couple hundred rounds each of 9mm, .45, and 5.56. Better to have more than you need...
