Anyone here a fan of the Sharps (now made by David-pedersoli) old single shot lever action? I found a peach of a deal on one, it is in a 45-70 with a 32 in barrel and the old creedmore tang style sight.

Just wondering if anyone else is a fan of these old dogs

Just for those who don't know what a Sharps is...

Old school single shot rolling block rifle w/ long, often octagonal barrels.

They're simple, sturdy lead-chuckers. Thing is like a personal artillery piece if properly loaded. The modern recreations of the classic are easy to "rod hot" with heavier loads, though the recoil approaches unbearable (ex: 405 gr. round at 1600 FPS, not quite "magnum" level) despite the relatively heavy"what-it-does to what-it-weighs" ratio (~13 pound / single shot). Accuracy is usually quite good (obviously not match) if you compensate for the bullet trajectory (artillery-style), although you'd expect that from a 32" barrel and modern jacketed factory ammunition.

I've heard they're great against larger game if you like the challenge of a single shot with iron sights and something old school and less than ergonomic than most modern pieces.

...

Anubis_82,

Any more details on the one you found?

I know a great number of people who competition shoot with the 45-70, 45-90, 45-110, 45-120, and the 50-90, the shoot at distances up to 1000 yards at a target that is about 36x36 or smaller. from what I have researches the 45-70 will reach out to 400 yards and be able to be lethal to large game at over 200 yards with a decent placed shot.

The velocity ranges from 1600 to a bit over 2500 FPS depending on bullet grain weight and loads.

I am going to be shooting the big old bitch here in the next few weeks.

If anyone is wondering as to what in th hell this piece is, just watch the movies Quigly down under. The rifle Tom Sellack shoots is close to what I have. Otherwise go to this link Category Details - Davide Pedersoli & C. this will give you and ideas as to what this small piece of history looks like. And if you are wondering, current cost on these range anywhere from $1000.00 to well over $3500.00 depending on the model and goodies you get with it. remember, you are paying for the nostalgia, not the technology. The large tang sight goes for 300+
I hope to hear of more people owning these and if anyone does own one, feel free to post a picture, I will post ine soon.
