Strike anywhere matches

Hi All,
I just came home from the gun show and they were selling strike anywhere match? The matches are being phased out by the government, why ? how do these matches form a threat to anything? I am just confused...

Thanks Wayne21

Any thought on this

Hmm, probably fire hazard. Though it's pretty cool to light those matches on your beard stubble.

It's dangerous to fall down with them in your pocket as they strike off each other.

Strike anywhere matches, gunpowder, sandpaper, and a tennis ball. . .

When I was a kid we used to make tennisball bombs out of them. It was tricky cause you had to scrape some of the matchheads off with a wooden spatula very carefully so it didn't ignite. They wouldn't damage anything. . much. . .but they made a great flash when you threw 'em.

with a little creativity, a coffee can, gunpowder, sand paper, and a strike anywhere match, you can also make a pretty effective land mine. . .

so yeah, they can be dangerous as hell. That said, I don't see where they'd need to be phased out. Bleach and aluminum foil can be dangerous too if you do the wrong things with 'em.

I need to stock up. I prefer Strike Anywhere matches, as when I was younger I had a difficult time with lighting matches out of a matchbook. Now I'm better at it, but the Strike Anywheres are just more fun.

I keep a few boxes around in a vacuum sealed bag. They're a novelty worth hanging onto... a quality addition to any survival kit.

Hi, I'm from the government. I'm here to help. Now, about those matches...

This "phased out by the government" stuff sounds a touch paranoid to me. I know the new commie administration wants to take away everything that is fun and goes bang, but c'mon. Strike-anywhere matches have been hard to find for YEARS.

Yeah, they can be a pain to find. I stock up when I see them. I prefer them for camping, and always keep a box in my survival kit in the trunk of my car.

Still, I'm not aware of any government attempt to phase them out. They're just less in demand since they're so easy for kids to use/abuse.

I had it on a floppy that was given to me by a friend of a friend. Good reading!

I used to shoot strike anywhere matches with my bbguns. If you put them in the barrel stick-first, they lit on impact, head first, they lit in the barrel and made a nice flash/tracer effect.

However, Waterproof matches > strike anywhere.

Called it in one. Actually I had the cookbook and the handbook. We all thought we were so cool and were in possession of something that the government would arrest us for having if they found out.

Strangely enough, they probably would have arrested us if we'd done the same thing today.

I haven't seen strike anywhere matches in about 20 years. Some states have laws banning them because they're a fire hazard if boxes are crushed or dropped, and they're banned from air travel.

Dunno, a quick search turned up strike anywhere matches for sale through Amazon.com. Are these not the same as the old ones I used in the boy scouts as a lad?

Amazon.com: strike anywhere matches

you can still get strike anywhere matches in 2 stores where i live. oddly enough, in one store, they are found with the "high falootin" cooking utensils and baking goods. the other store they are near the charcoal. personally, i have always felt they where safer, because with strike on box matches, you end up with a lit match in one hand, a box of flammable matches in the other, and they are 3 inches apart or less. at least with strike anywhere, you don't have to ignite your match on a box of incendiary devices. amusingly enough, my technique for lighting book matches apparently is highly dangerous and can lead to other people imbedding lit match heads in there fingers trying to copy you. (hold the match in one hand, and pinch the matchbook strip and match between thumb and forefinger of other hand and pull...fast. match lights. if you pull slow, match lights under you finger) but yes, i have noticed that strike anywhere's are much harder to find in general.
