Bullets @ 1 Million FPS

This makes that original bullet cutting the card look like it was special effects.

Interesting, I never thought that it would practically liquefy on impact.

very cool, a bit long, but still very cool.

shotgun at the end.

Very cool video. I like watching the armor piercing rounds slide right through that steel.

very cool, i guess i never realized the liquid properties when I consider bullets. shotgun was interesting too. Would have liked to see them use a larger piece of ballistic gel so that it actually stopped the bullet too.

Why are the craters formed by the bullets impact curve "outwards"? i.e. The surface that is hit, the entry surface, has a hole, that looks as if the bullet exited instead of entered.

How come?

For the same reason that craters on the moon have a raised lip. The impact creates high pressure in the substrate, and the material flows away from the high pressure region the easiest way it can. If the metal goes forwards or sideways, it encounters more metal, but it only has to push against air if it goes backwards.

The liquefaction of the metal is understandable when you consider the amount of kinetic energy being converted into heat in such a short amount of time. It's wonderfully cool to see the process in the video. Somewhat similar effects happen with railguns that impart too much energy into the projectile upon launch... the projectile can't absorb the acceleration without heating, and, with more powerful guns, may actually vaporise just from being fired.

Trivia: On a smaller scale, this is why modern bullets are covered with copper jackets. Modern smokeless powder propels naked lead bullets so fast that they get too hot, melt, and coat the barrel with lead as they twist through the rifling, fouling it quickly. Full metal jacket projectiles are required with smokeless powder to maintain accuracy and prevent stoppages.

The Exlim EX-FH20 can do 1000FPS, and costs about $850. The million FPS camera used for this video is the Hyper Vision HPV-1, which is out of the amateur's budget at a MSRP of $205,000

That's an awesome video. The tremendous amount of energy is fascinating. I wonder what they used when those bullets were hitting the corner. It took a pounding without hurting the edge too much.
